Throughout the planning stages of the Centenary Celebrations there was a strong under-current from members that our celebrations should include those less fortunate than ourselves.
In his address at the Cardiff Conference in May 2007 Bro Grand President floated the idea that all the Presidents in the Centenary Year consider pooling the money raised by their President's Charity to augment any residual proportion of the Centenary Levy devoted to a charitable cause. By doing this he suggested we could make a real difference to people's lives and leave behind a legacy of which we could all be proud. In a letter sent out in June 2007 Brothers were asked to make suggestions for a suitable recipient. A number of Brothers suggested clean water projects and at its meeting in October Grand Council unanimously supported this suggestion. In November 2007 Grand President wrote to all incoming Centenary Year Presidents explaining the background to the appeal and asking for their support.
The Catenians know a lot about raising money but nothing about clean water projects. Grand Council has therefore teamed up with CAFOD, a member of the Caritas International Group of Catholic charities, which has a proven track record in this work. The appeal will pay for clean water projects in Southern Africa, especially Zimbabwe where there is great need.
Ban on foreign aid workers
The Association has been in close and continuing touch with CAFOD since the Zimbabwean Government’s ban on foreign aid workers.
The message is we press on with our fundraising so that when volunteers can operate as before our efforts will enable CAFOD and Caritas to step in quickly and effectively.
The need for help by then will surely be greater than ever. Our efforts will not be wasted but appreciated all the more. Far from easing back, please redouble your fundraising efforts.
