Speaking up for Christian belief

Public Affairs Committee

As its name suggests, the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Catenian Association exists to monitor activity, especially proposed legislation and current practices, which can or could contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church and have a negative impact on the beliefs and practices of both the Catholic Church and the wider Christian community. The Committee's remit is:

  • to keep itself informed of appropriate activity
  • to keep the membership abreast of developments and/or threats in the various fields and encourage action when appropriate
  • to work closely with other organisations with similar views (especially the Catholic Union of Great Britain)
  • and to make submissions on the Catholic/Christian viewpoint to relevant bodies when appropriate.

Activity recently monitored by the PAC includes Bills regarding Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill; the Law Commission's review of the Law on Murder and its reference to 'mercy killing'; the Equality Act 2006; the Education and Inspections Bill; Mental Incapacity Bill; the Civil Partnership Bill and on-going concerns such as abortion and embryo research.

The Committee is made up of Catenians who, through their academic or professional expertise, can match the knowledge of those whose views they oppose on moral or religious grounds. The Committee collectively has the breadth of knowledge, and the individuals the depth of knowledge in specific fields, to enter into informed debate and give guidance on the issues.
